چکیده

This communication concerns two patients in whom spuriously enhanced SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase; L-aspartate: 2-oxoglutarate amino-transferase, EC 2.6.1.1), as determined by the SMA 12/60 AutoAnalyzer (Technicon Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y. 10591), led to erroneous diagnoses of liver disease. This error can be avoided by checking suspect supranormal SMA 12/60 values by ultraviolet spectroscopy

Ketone ester effects on metabolism and transcription.

Ketosis induced by starvation or feeding a ketogenic diet has widespread and often contradictory effects due to the simultaneous elevation of both ketone bodies and free fatty acids. The elevation of ketone bodies increases the energy of ATP hydrolysis by reducing the mitochondrial NAD couple and oxidizing the coenzyme Q couple, thus increasing the redox span between site I and site II. In cont...

Histological and histochemical studies on experimental allergic myositis and human polymyositis.

Some histological and histochemical findings on the allergic experimental myositis of guinea pig and human cases with neuromuscular diseases were reported. Innoculated animals showed hardly any clinical sings but histological changes of thigh muscle and diaphragma which were similar to those seen in human polymyositis. Diaphragma showed more remarkable changes than thigh muscle. In human polymy...

Repeated spurious elevation of serum prostate-specific antigen values solved by chemiluminescence analysis: A possible interference by heterophilic antibodies

Heterophilic antibodies are human immunoglobulins directed against various animal antigens. They can produce false-positive results in the analysis of different tumor markers, including prostate-specific antigen. This interference can lead to misdiagnosis, unnecessary tests, and overtreatment in some cases. We present herein the case of a 52-year-old man with repeated spurious elevation of pros...

A novel chemical method for measuring ketone bodies in subclinical ketosis

Backgrounds: Subclinical ketosis can cause greater economic loss due to a lack of clinical symptoms. Objectives: The present study was aimed to design a chemical method for measuring serum ketone bodies in the affected subclinical cows. Methods: Acetoacetate concentrations were measured using a nitroprusside reaction and b-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) which was oxidized to acetoacetate using nan...

Studies on human liver bilirubin-UDP-glycosyl transferase. I. Assay methods for bilirubin-UDP-glucuronyl and -xylosyl transferases of human liver specimen.

Micromethods for estimation of bilirubin uridine diphosphate-glucuronyl and -xylosyl transferases in liver are described. With these methods, a liver specimen as small as 10 mg is sufficient for assay of either enzyme activity and 15 mg is sufficient for assay of both enzymes. Normal values for livers with minimal elevation of SGOT and minimal histological change were 0.260-0.400 U/g protein fo...
